The Story of Burro Fiberglass Campers: A Vintage Glamping Experience Near Death Valley National Park

In the heart of the rugged Mojave Desert, just outside Death Valley National Park, we’ve found a way to blend the charm of the past with the needs of modern travelers. At our small campground, we specialize in transforming vintage Burro Fiberglass Campers into unique, cozy glamping accommodations. These tiny, egg-shaped trailers from the late 1970s and 1980s have proven to be perfect companions for the arid beauty of our environment, offering an unforgettable alternative to traditional hotels.

A Brief History of Burro Campers

The Burro Camper story began in the 1970s when fiberglass trailers were gaining popularity for their lightweight durability and iconic designs. Unlike their boxy counterparts, these rounded trailers became known for their aerodynamic shape and ease of towing. Burro was a standout in this market, with its compact, 13-foot model that prioritized simplicity and functionality.

Although production was relatively short-lived, the Burro earned a cult following among outdoor enthusiasts for its sturdy build and retro charm. Decades later, these campers have become prized collectibles, making them a perfect fit for our vision of sustainable and stylish glamping.

Why Burros Work So Well in Our Environment

The Death Valley region can be an unforgiving place, with extreme summer heat, chilly winter nights, and occasional high winds. That’s why Burro campers are an ideal match for our environment:

  • Durability: Their fiberglass shells are built to withstand the elements, making them resilient against the intense desert sun and dust.

  • Natural Insulation: Paired with our custom renovations, the fiberglass body helps maintain a stable interior temperature, perfect for cool winter evenings.

  • Retro Appeal: Let’s not forget the charm—our guests love the vintage aesthetic of staying in a camper that feels both timeless and modern.

Our Third Burro Camper Is Nearly Ready

We’re thrilled to announce that our third Burro camper is almost complete! Over the past months, we’ve transformed this vintage gem into a fun aternative to staying in a hotel. From its restored exterior to the cozy, modernized interior, every detail was designed with comfort and style in mind.

  • Interior Touches: The interior boasts plush bedding, warm lighting, a kitchenette, and curated decor that pays homage to the camper’s vintage roots.

  • Desert Comforts: We've installed an energy-efficient heating system to keep guests warm during the cool desert nights and plenty of ventilation for daytime comfort.

This newly refurbished camper will be available for bookings starting in early December, just in time for the cool, crisp hiking season in Death Valley.
