What Can You See?
What appears on any particular night depends on the season, moon phase, weather and time of night. On a clear, moonless evening, the sky can reveal far more stars than visitors are accustomed to seeing at home.
Depending on the time of year, you may see bright planets, familiar constellations, passing satellites, meteor showers and the Milky Way. Even when the moon is bright enough to soften the fainter stars, moonlight across the vineyard and surrounding desert creates a different kind of nighttime landscape.
No telescope is required. Binoculars can be helpful, but the best place to begin is simply with your own eyes.
How to Plan a Better Stargazing Night
For the darkest conditions, check the moon phase before selecting your dates. Nights near a new moon generally reveal more faint stars, while nights around a full moon illuminate the desert and mountains.
Give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Avoid bright white phone lights and use a dim red light when possible. Bring a warm layer, even after a hot desert day, and allow enough time to sit quietly rather than treating the sky as a quick photo stop.
Visitors interested in night-sky photography should bring a tripod and a camera or phone with a night mode. Please keep lighting considerate so neighboring guests can enjoy the darkness too.
Stay for Sunset—and Keep Looking Up
Stargazing at Tarantula Ranch begins before the first stars appear.
Sunset often brings changing color to the Amargosa Mountains and the open desert around the vineyard. Afterward, the brightest planets and stars emerge, followed by fainter details as the sky becomes fully dark.
Guests can choose from camping, glamping, RV accommodations and a private guest space, depending on availability. Shared amenities include hot showers, an outdoor kitchen and the Wine Hall. Strong Wi-Fi is available, although the sky may persuade you to put the phone away for a while.

A Dark-Sky Base Near Death Valley
Tarantula Ranch is approximately 20 minutes from Death Valley Junction, a gateway to Death Valley National Park. It also provides access to Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and the wider Amargosa Valley.
That location makes it possible to explore during the day without giving up the experience of a peaceful desert night. Rather than ending your day beneath city lights, you can return to a small vineyard, watch the sunset and see what appears overhead.
